The Emporia State basketball teams picked up wins over Newman Sunday.
The Lady Hornets had 5 players score in double figures in an 82-48 win over Newman. Emporia State held a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and would never give up the lead.
Coach Toby Wynn said the defensive effort made the difference.
Karsen Schultz led Emporia State with a game-high 20 points.
Victoria Price added 14 points. Tre’Zure Jobe, who left the game in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury, finished with 13 points. Ehlaina Hartman and Fredricka Sheats both scored 10 points.
The Emporia State women are now 10-9 for the season and 5-8 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State men outscored Newman 85-69.
It was a close 1st half with the Hornets leading 39-37 at halftime. The 2nd half belonged to Emporia State. They led by as many as 17 points.
Coach Craig Doty said the 2nd half defense was the difference.
Jumah’Ri Turner led the Hornets in scoring with 25 points.
Mayuom Buom finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Tray Buchanan added 13 points and Kaden Evans finished with 12 points.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 15-5 for the season and 10-4 in the MIAA.
Emporia State plays at Northeastern State on Thursday.
