It’ll be springtime before it happens, but LCAT buses are set to undergo a transformation this year.
The transformation was set up by Lyon County Commission action last week to approve a roughly $9,300 bid from a Houston, Texas company to put new design overlays on the entire LCAT fleet. On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, Director Shane Brunner reiterated his comments from last week that the original goal was to give a visual cue LCAT serves the entire community instead of just senior citizens. When the effort started in 2018 under former director Mike Halleran, there were also concerns about similar-designed transportation from other local entities.
Brunner says the new designs will include a jaguar, lion, leopard and tiger. There will be a “slow rollout” this spring and summer, but much of the fleet will be redesigned near the same time.
Funding initially came available in 2019 through the state’s Access Innovation and Collaboration Grant. LCAT applied for the new wraps, as well as new radios and security cameras. The radio and camera projects finished last year, but funding for the new designs were put on hold for much of the COVID pandemic before the state effort recently resumed.
