With winter set to return in force Tuesday night, we had a short-lived return to spring Monday — and the latest daily record high temperature in the process.
The National Weather Service says Monday’s high temperature was 71 degrees at Emporia Municipal Airport, eclipsing the prior Jan. 31 record of 70 degrees in 2009. Weather Service records for the airport date back to 1950.
The Municipal Airport had several daily record highs between Thanksgiving and Christmas:
*Nov. 29 had a high of 77, above the previous record of 74 set in 1998.
*Dec. 2’s high of 79 degrees set the all-time monthly high for a December and surpassed both the daily high of 72 from 2001 and the prior monthly high of 74 set Dec. 5, 2001.
*Dec. 14’s high of 68 degrees was above the prior mark of 65 degrees set in 1965.
*Dec. 15’s high of 76 topped the previous high of 69 degrees set in 2002.
