Sometimes when I visit with you on Wednesday’s I discuss topics that I actually have knowledge of or have done enough re-searching to know quite a bit about it.
Today’s topic has had me confused ever since I got involved with cable television way back when we started the process of founding ValuNet Fiber.
We were so naïve we actually thought we were going to make a profit on cable TV service. What we learned was that while we had no other choice than to offer cable TV in our package that our goal would be to do so without losing money. Profit was not possible!
What most of you now know is that the cost of cable TV offerings is decided almost entirely by the Programmers like ESPN, Disney, and Nexstar plus local news providers like WIBW and KSNT.
That’s why everyone in Emporia buying cable TV service from ValuNet or Spark Light received a letter explaining to them why their monthly cable bill would be increasing 6% starting in March.
Interestingly the headline on the letter said, “ARE YOU READY TO CUT THE CORD AND TRY STREAMING?” The letter goes on to offer to help you “cut the cord” if you are interested.
Isn’t that counterproductive or at least confusing?
I guess it would be if ValuNet was making money on cable TV, but as explained above companies like ValuNet are lucky to break even on cable TV!
I decided to take them up on their offer and call 620-208-5000 for an appointment.
I learned that we can drop our cable TV and replace it with YouTube TV or one of a number of choices and still have the local Topeka stations, 85 live TV channels, and options for a lot more.
Bobbi and I watch a lot of TV and have availed ourselves of a number of Apps like Net Flix and others. If we switch to YouTube TV and keep our existing Apps our monthly bill will decrease by over a hundred dollars!
ValuNet is offering to let us try this new plan for 30 days before deciding if we want to keep it.
If you still are on Cable TV or a satellite service I suggest you call 620-208-5000 and ask about “Cutting the Cord.”
