The Lyon County Spelling Bee is coming Thursday.
27 students in grades 3-8 from across the county will be coming the Humanitarian Center in Emporia looking to advance on to the Sunflower State Spelling Bee in March. This year’s spelling bee is being hosted by USD 251 North Lyon County and North Lyon County Elementary School Principal Robert Hampton says this is an exciting opportunity for all of the competitors to demonstrate what they are learning in the classroom in a real-world setting.
Hampton says there will be no rule or format changes to this year’s competition, however, there will be mitigation strategies in place due to COVID-19. This includes recommended mask use, all students will be facing forwards rather than each other throughout the competition and there will be no punch social following the competition’s completion.
Competitors will arrive at the Humanitarian Center at 9 am Thursday with the competition set to begin at 9:45 am. KVOE will broadcast the spelling bee in its entirety on KVOE 1400 am, 96.9 fm and KVOE.com.
