Last fall, the Mechanic Street underpass was closed for nearly two months as a contractor for Burlington Northern Santa Fe repaired the bridge structure on top of the underpass. More work for the underpass is coming soon.
Emporia City Clerk Kerry Sull says the railroad’s contractor is starting another round of repairs Wednesday. The project was first announced as starting next week.
The underpass will be closed for up to two months for bridge construction. Signed detours will be in place for the duration of the project.
This follows a wreck last month when a southbound semi got wedged near the southern edge of the bridge deck, but city staff have not said whether that incident led to the upcoming repairs.
