The Emporia State men’s basketball team took down the number 2 ranked team in the nation Tuesday night, defeating Northwest Missouri State 75-56.
The Hornets used a 10-0 run in the first half to take a lead they would not give up. They held Northwest to 18 first-half points to lead 32-18 at halftime.
Emporia State’s biggest lead in the 2nd half was by 22 points.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty called it an outstanding effort.
Tray Buchanan led the Hornets with 29 points. Jumah’Ri Turner finished with 20 points.
Brenden Van Dyke added 15 points. He started the 2nd half for Emporia State with a dunk and 3 pointer.
The Hornets with the win improve to 17 and 6 for the season and 12-5 in the MIAA.
Northwest Missouri State won the women’s game 70-54. The Emporia State women struggled offensively shooting 34 percent from the floor and made only 4 three point baskets.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn said that was the big difference.
Ehlaina Hartman and Kali Martin led Emporia State in scoring with 16 points. Victoria Price added 14 points.
The Lady Hornets fall to 11-11 for the season and 6-10 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State men and women will host Lincoln Saturday afternoon.
