The Shockers had an early 9 point lead but Central Florida turned the tables and led by 16 in the first half and Wichita State never caught up.
Tyson Etienne scored 17 of his game-high 26 in the second half for WSU (12-9, 3-6 American), which nearly overcame a 16-point second-half deficit.
Craig Porter Jr added 14 points and Dexter Dennis finished with 11 points.
The Shockers will host South Florida Saturday.
