A day after failing to have enough votes to override Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of the Congressional redistricting map, the Kansas Senate revoted — and now has enough votes to override.
On Monday, the Senate voted 24-15 to override, three votes short of the supermajority needed to overrule the governor. After two Republican senators, Mark Steffen of Hutchinson and Alicia Straub of Ellinwood, changed their votes and two others, John Doll of Garden City and Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha, voted present, the Senate had its 27-vote threshold for the override.
17th District Senator Jeff Longbine of Emporia voted yes both Monday and Tuesday.
The so-called Ad Astra 2 map moves Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties from the First District to the Second, joining Coffey and Osage counties. The map also splits parts of Wyandotte and Douglas counties, moving them from the Third District to the Second.
The override effort now goes to the House, which was short of having enough votes for an override when it passed the map initially.
