Olpe Schools can claim the winners of the last two Lyon County Spelling Bees after Alisa Skalsky of Olpe Elementary came out on top Thursday.
Skalsky correctly spelled “allergenic” to win after 10 rounds of competition, including three with runner-up Samuel Vant Leven of Sacred Heart. She says she studied a lot before the event.
Last year’s spelling bee, held virtually by Sacred Heart, went 32 rounds, including 20 rounds of back-and-forth between the eventual winner Jordan Crouch and runner-up Garrett Hammond, both of Olpe Junior High. This year’s event, hosted by North Lyon County Elementary at the Humanitarian Center, went 10 rounds to set the winner. Three more rounds were needed to finalize the top five, including Adrianna Sieberns of Olpe Junior High in third, Cecilia Westhoff of Neosho Rapids Elementary in fourth and Crady Meek of Hartford Junior High in fifth.
Skalsky now advances to the Sunflower State Spelling Bee to be held at Newman University on Saturday, Mar. 26.
