There is still some issue pinpointing the impact of a winter storm expected to hit the area later this week, but the weather leading into that storm system will set the stage for very high fire danger areawide.
The National Weather Service has already issued a fire weather watch for Chase and Greenwood counties from 12-6 pm Tuesday, reflecting temperatures near 70 degrees, low humidity levels, southerly winds possibly above 45 mph and dry vegetation. Fire weather watches are of note because they typically lead to red flag warnings, which signal automatic burn bans for affected counties. At the very least, controlled burns will be strongly discouraged Tuesday.
The winter storm is set to move in Wednesday with a decent chance of rain, followed by a changeover to snow before midnight. So far, the Weather Service has not given a traditional forecast for snow amounts and it only says Emporia has a less than 40 percent chance of getting at least an inch of snow.
