The court process is now underway for an Emporia man accused of killing a dog over the weekend.
Alan Johnson, 32, was formally charged with single counts of felony animal cruelty and drug paraphernalia. He had his first appearance in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday and has a preliminary hearing set for March 9.
The court case follows early findings of an Emporia Police investigation after several reports of suspected cruelty towards a dog in the 1100 block of Sylvan on Sunday night, including a dog placed in a nearby dumpster. Officers say they found a dead dog in a dumpster shortly before arresting Johnson on suspicion of cruelty.
Noon Tuesday: Charges filed in Emporia animal cruelty case
Formal charges have been filed against an Emporia man accused of animal cruelty.
Assistant Lyon County Attorney Carissa Brinker says 32-year-old Alan Johnson has been charged with one felony count of animal cruelty and one count of possessing drug paraphernalia.
The felony animal cruelty count stems from the death of a dog as reported by Emporia Police as part of an initial investigation that started Sunday night in the 1100 block of Sylvan. Officers began investigating after several public reports of suspected cruelty around that time, including a dog being placed into a nearby dumpster. The investigation continues into this case.
Johnson has his first appearance in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
