Last Friday night Emporia State Athletics completed their inductions to their Hall of Honor in a ceremony at the Emporia Country Club.
Five people were honored: Alan Johnson, Brittany Miller Hicks, Cassandra Boston Richards, Ali Brattin-Volkens, and KVOE’s Greg Rahe.
Alan Johnson was a track star in the ’70s and unfortunately was unable to attend.
The ladies were all members of the Lady Hornet’s 2010 National Championship basketball team and won many honors as such. Miller also was an All-American volleyball player.
Rather than describing those honors again, I think you’ll be more interested in what these amazing ladies are doing now.
All three are married and have a child – Ali actually has two!
Miller is a Nurse Practitioner in Cardiology at a Kansas City hospital.
Boston is a Certified Public Accountant with a large accounting firm in Dallas.
Volkens is a physical therapist owning and operating two offices in Kansa City.
Pretty impressive former student-athletes!
And then there was our Greg Rahe who was honored for being “The Voice of the Hornets” for over 34 years. That’s a long time, but listen to this fun fact: Greg is the longest continuous service employee of Emporia’s Radio Stations!
As a part of Greg’s introduction Carman Leeds, Chairman of the Hall of Honor Selection Committee said she thought “Rahe’s greatest asset was the passion he displays when doing his job” and she was not wrong.
Greg’s dedication, work ethic, and passion are all legendary.
With that said let me share with you Greg’s trait I find most unique – I suggest it’s respect.
Now, you probably think I’m describing the kind of respect Greg gets from his coworkers, coaches, and players- like when we surprised him during a Saturday Morning Sportstalk show to recognize his starting his 31st year at KVOE. We had so many coaches show up we had to bring them into the studio in shifts.
Greg Rahe IS widely respected, but I’m talking about the respect Greg shows to everyone he covers or works with. He treats a sophomore soccer player from the high school with the same respect he shows an All-American performer from the university.
Greg was correctly honored by ESU for his service to the Hornet Nation, but his service extends farther and wider than is imaginable and we are all lucky he serves us too! Greg is truly an ICON!
Thank you, Sir.
I’m Steve Sauder
