The Emporia State mens basketball team rallied for a 76-75 win over Northwest Missouri State Monday night to complete the regular-season sweep of the defending National Champion.
Trailing 71-70 with 1:16 to play Emporia State would go 6 for 6 from the free-throw line to earn the win. Tray Buchanan was 4 for 4 including the last 2 that gave the Hornets a 76-72 lead. Brenden Van Dyke made 2 free throws and finished with a career-high 25 points.
The game featured 19 lead changes and 16 ties. The biggest lead for Emporia State was by 6 in the first half. The biggest lead for Northwest was by 8 in the first half. The game was tied at halftime at 36.
Coach Craig Doty was proud of his team.
Mayuom Buom added 18 points, Jumah’Ri Turner finished with 13 points and Tray Buchanan scored 11 points.
Northwest was led by Trevor Hudgins with 24 points.
With the win the Hornets improve to 19 and 7 for the season and 14-6 in the MIAA.
Northwest won the womens game 77-65. Northwest led at the end of the first quarter 25-10. Emporia State had cut the deficit to 1 at 54-53 late in the 3rd quarter but could never take the lead.
Coach Toby Wynn said the first-quarter deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
Tre’Zure Jobe scored a career-high 36 points the lead the Lady Hornets. Ehlaina Hartman added 10 points.
The Emporia State women fall to 13-13 for the season and 8-12 in the MIAA.
Both the Emporia State men and women host Pittsburg State Wednesday night.
After Monday’s game, Jumah’Ri Turner moved up to number 13 on the All-Time scoring list with 1302 career points. He is 2 points back of Doug Glaysher in 12th place, 29 points back of Shawn Herrman who is in 11th place, and 50 points back of Dale Cushinberry who is in 10th place.
Tray Buchanan moved up to number 4 on the single-season scoring list with 679 points. He is 126 points back of Ryan Sprecker who is in 3rd place.
Tre’Zure Jobe moved up to 11th place on the women’s all-time scoring list with 1463 points. She is 37 points back of Pam Bulson who is the number 10 all-time leading scorer.
