A concern about travel issues stemming from scattered freezing drizzle did not come to fruition, according to area authorities.
Despite some icing reported across parts of Coffey and Osage counties, no crashes were reported Tuesday morning. Freezing drizzle and snow flurries developed as a powerful cold front dropped temperatures from the low 70s late Monday afternoon to the low teens early Tuesday. Wind chills were as low as -7 early Tuesday and could be down around -10 early Wednesday.

5:35 am Tuesday: Winter weather advisory posted for Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 8 am
Monday had near-record highs. Tuesday is starting with below-zero wind chills and a chance of freezing drizzle.
The National Weather Service has issued a short winter weather advisory affecting Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 8 am Tuesday. The main concern is scattered areas of freezing drizzle, which would lead to slick roads, elevated surfaces and intersections, and there have been some reports of freezing drizzle east of Emporia, both in Coffey County and in Osage County north of Lyndon. This has led to a schedule adjustment. Click here for details on the KVOE.com Closings and Cancellations page.
Affected roads may remain slick after any freezing drizzle comes to an end.
Monday’s temperatures climbed to 72 at the Emporia Municipal Airport, narrowly missing another daily record high for the city. The cold front that came in Monday night and brought snow flurries to the area also pushed overnight temperatures into the mid-teens and dropped the wind chill below zero before 4 am Tuesday. Wind chills will likely be even colder Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with the “feel-like” temperature possibly as low as -10.
Light snow returns Wednesday night into Thursday. The latest forecast models have a dusting to an inch of snow for the area, along with occasionally breezy conditions and highs in the mid-20s. High temperatures may not get above freezing until Saturday.
