For a few days last week, Rescue Mission and Abundant Harvest Director Lee Alderman was worried.
Alderman had been told the Feinstein Challenge, which generated upwards of $60,000 to $65,000 per year for at least 15 years, was going away because lead funder Alan Shawn Feinstein is 91 years old and no longer offering the dollar-for-dollar match. Late last week, though, Alderman announced the creation of the Emporia Anti-Hunger Challenge to serve the same fundraising purpose: operating expenses for both the Rescue Mission and Abundant Harvest. Alderman says an anonymous local donor is offering a dollar-for-dollar match.
The drive begins Tuesday and runs through April 30. To donate, go online to the Emporia Community Foundation’s website, www.emporiacf.org, and select Abundant Harvest as the recipient or send checks to Abundant Harvest, Box 901 in Emporia.
The campaign begins with steady demand for services, both through the Rescue Mission and Abundant Harvest. It is also separate from the push to buy the Rescue Mission, which was completed last year, and ongoing renovations to Abundant Harvest.
