Emporia Police say an Emporia man suffered serious injuries after his SUV was hit by a train Wednesday afternoon.
Police Capt. Ray Mattas says 26-year-old John Burton went around the crossing arms at Market Street and was hit by a train. Emporia Fire took Burton to Newman Regional Health for treatment afterward.
The investigation continues.
Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says there was also a small fuel leak from the passenger vehicle, but that was handled quickly.
For several hours, there was a nearly-one-mile-long detour for drivers around the train, which blocked crossings from Constitution Street west to near Peyton. The train was cleared to proceed overnight.

Details are still limited after a train and passenger vehicle collided near downtown Emporia on Wednesday.
The incident was reported shortly before 4:30 pm. Initially, Emporia Fire and Emporia Police were dispatched to the Congress Street underpass, but later went to the Market Street crossing after learning the vehicle was actually there.
Interim Fire Chief Brandon Beck says one person was taken to Newman Regional Health. Further details are pending through Emporia Police, and it may take until next Tuesday for the crash report to be filed.

5:40 pm Wednesday: Emporia Police investigating after train-vehicle crash; one person hurt
One person was hurt and hospitalized after a train collided with a passenger vehicle near downtown Emporia late Wednesday afternoon.

With the train stretching from near the State Street underpass to near Peyton, there has been a significant detour from Second to Fourth. That will remain in place until further notice.
Emporia Fire has returned to the 300 block of Market after a reported gas leak. There is no indication whether that is connected to the crash incident.
