The Emporia man seriously hurt in Wednesday’s SUV-train crash near downtown Emporia has passed away.
Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas says John HF Burton died Friday at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka because of injuries suffered in the wreck.
Mattas has said Burton, 26, drove his SUV around the crossing arms at Market Street before the vehicle was hit by a westbound train. That statement has been challenged on social media, but Mattas says there is no evidence the crossing arms were not properly working at the time of the crash.
Funeral arrangements are pending. The crash investigation is ongoing.
