About the only thing missing from this weekend’s weather forecast is a heat wave.
That’s obviously a stretch, but we have storms and the possibility of red flag warnings for critical fire danger in Saturday’s forecast — with snow and freezing rain now a distinct possibility for Sunday night into Monday.
Very high fire danger, a daily feature in this week’s weather forecasts, returns Friday. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a declaration of disaster emergency for the potential of grass fire activity. The declaration lets the state move “aerial firefighting assets” from the Kansas Forest Service across the state to speed up response times if needed.
The governor’s declaration continues for Saturday, when fire danger will likely be critical both before and after a chance of showers and storms comes across the area by Saturday afternoon. Lyon, Morris and Wabaunsee counties are in a fire weather watch from 12-6 pm, while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate watch from 9 am-6 pm. Fire weather watches often lead to red flag warnings, which trigger automatic burn bans for area counties — if they aren’t already in one. Chase County is now in a county-specific burn ban through Sunday.
Sunday will be notably cooler with highs in the low 50s. Rain chances redevelop by afternoon, with a chance of snow and freezing rain overnight through much of Monday morning.
