The Emporia Lions Club was looking forward to the return of its annual biscuits and gravy breakfast and judging by Saturday’s turnout at the Emporia Senior Center, so was the local community.
Lions Club President Tammy Edmiston says business was more than steady from the very start of the event, in fact she tells KVOE News that community members were lined up outside the door before the event officially began.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s breakfast had to be canceled which was significant as the breakfast is the club’s only major fundraiser each year. Because of this, Edmiston says the club’s presence in the local community was diminished somewhat over the past year.
With the solid turnout Saturday, Edmiston says they’re very excited for the opportunity to be more involved in the local community compared to 2021, however, she says they will not be looking to make up all the “lost ground” at one time. All proceeds from the breakfast will go to support Lions Club projects throughout the community including providing free eye screenings and checkups for local residents.
Edmiston reports the club served just under 500 meals Saturday and brought in $1,093 at the door. Final totals are currently pending.
The breakfast comes as the Lions Club is getting set to celebrate its 100 year anniversary in the Emporia community next month.
Edmiston says they do have a celebration planned to commemorate the milestone with more information to be announced at a later time.
