The Olpe Eagles and Burlingame Lady Bearcats are state bound following sub-state championship wins Saturday in Olpe.
The Olpe Eagles will get to defend their state title in Dodge City after defeating Burlingame 49-33 in the boy’s sub-state final.
After Burlingame opened the scoring, Olpe would use a 6-0 run to give them a lead they would never relinquish and would later use a 16-0 run in the second quarter to help build 26-12 halftime lead.
Olpe would hold Burlingame to just points in the second half as they advanced on to the state tournament next week.
Olpe was led by senior Damon Redeker with 19 points. Senior Derek Hoelting added 18.
Head Coach Chris Schmidt says their defense set the tone.
Burlingame was led by senior Trevor Quaney with 11 points.
In the girl’s game, Burlingame once again overcame a first-half deficit to punch their ticket to the state tournament for the first time defeating St. Paul 44-39.
After being held to just four points in the first quarter Burlingame would go on to outscore St. Paul in every quarter the rest of the way. St. Paul would make a late run to try and tie the ball game in the fourth coming as close as three to evening the score, however, the Lady Bearcats would manage to build a two-possession lead late in the fourth that St. Paul could not overcome en-route to a sub-state title.
Senior Daelyn Winters led Burlingame with 20 points. Sophomore Kaylin Noonan added 12.
Coach Jeff Slater says he couldn’t be prouder of the resilience his team has shown throughout the season.
