Further details have been released following a double fatality crash west of Emporia Sunday afternoon.
According to Lyon County Deputy Jody Meyers, Deputies, Emporia Police, Lyon County EMS and Chase County EMS were called to the intersection of Road C and US Highway 50 around 4:30 pm for a three-vehicle accident. Meyers says a 2014 Chevy Malibu driven by 31-year-old Nichole Gibbons of Wichita was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 and for unknown reasons crossed the center median striking a westbound 2020 Hyundai Palisade driven by 53-year-old James Morton of Dodge City.
The Malibu then turned sideways and was struck by a westbound 2009 Nissan Quest driven by 49-year-old Steven Miller of Hutchison. Gibbons and her son, 11-year-old Terell Gibbons of Topeka, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Miller was taken to Newman Regional Health with undisclosed injuries. Morton and a passenger, 43-year-old Sheree Morton of Dodge City, were examined at the scene but refused medical treatment.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the accident.
