A southeast Lyon County landmark is in the process of being demolished.
The former location of Bill’s Hardware and Electrical, 225 Commercial, started coming down Monday. The two-story, better than 13,000-square-foot building was constructed all the way back in 1872 as mixed retail and office units, with the hardware store on the ground floor and the upper story at times serving as an opera house, club lodge and other uses.
Pam Landis of Hartford State Bank says Bill and Theda Wolford operated the hardware store from the 1960s until about seven years ago, when Larry Fowler purchased the building. Bricks are being salvaged and will cover the demolition costs, a process that could take several weeks. Other items inside are in the process of being salvaged as well.
