Based on the early snowfall projections, areas north of Emporia may get decidedly higher accumulations than anywhere else in the KVOE listening area Thursday.
With its first snowfall range forecast for Thursday’s incoming winter storm, the National Weather Service says Emporia could see 1-2 inches of snow starting before sunrise. Initial percentage projections showing Emporia at a nearly 50 percent chance of at least 4 inches of snow have been cut in half.
Totals increase the further north you go, and Wabaunsee County could see anywhere from 4-9 inches of snow. Wabaunsee County is among several counties in north central and northeast Kansas in a winter storm watch from 6 pm Wednesday to 6 pm Thursday.
Regardless of the totals, slick conditions are expected. Visibility will also be reduced with winds as high as 25 mph.
11 am Tuesday: Light to moderate snowfall possible areawide Thursday morning
More snowfall looks to be likely across the KVOE listening area Thursday morning. Exactly how much is to be determined.
The National Weather Service has light to moderate snowfall across the area, perhaps starting shortly after midnight Thursday and continuing through the morning. Current forecasts have Emporia at a nearly 50-percent chance of getting at least four inches of snowfall, with a less than 20-percent chance of getting at least six inches. The heaviest snowfall could well be along and north of Interstate 70 into southern Nebraska.
Travel issues are expected, with northeasterly winds as high as 25 mph reducing visibility. Slick driving conditions will likely be widespread if the current forecast holds.
The projected snowfall comes after around an inch of sleet across the area Sunday. We’ll keep you updated on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
