Americus Police says the city’s outdoor warning siren does not work.
The Americus City Council is looking to replace the siren, but it could take anywhere from four to eight weeks to have it replaced. The council may meet as soon as Tuesday to discuss the matter further.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will “act accordingly” during any weather event before the siren is replaced, including using the sirens on deputy cruisers to alert the community in case of high-level severe weather like a tornado. Undersheriff John Koelsch also says Americus residents need to pay attention to broadcast media and cell phone alerts, especially if they are indoors, while the siren is changed out.
