If you are interested in becoming Emporia’s next city commissioner, you can reach out to City Manager Trey Cocking or any city commissioner.
The process is getting underway soon to replace Rob Gilligan, who is leaving Emporia for Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he will serve as the city’s Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. Gilligan has been a city commissioner here for over a decade and has led the Ignite Emporia department of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce since it was established two years ago.
On KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday, Cocking said the process will launch when the position is officially announced. The city takes applications for 15 days. Once the application window closes, the remaining commissioners will vote at the next regular meeting. Cocking says there’s a lot to being a city commissioner.
A simple majority is needed for a selection. If there is a 2-2 tie, commissioners can vote up to two more times — and if the board remains deadlocked, a decision will have to come at the next action meeting.
Discussion about the process is not currently on the City Commission’s action meeting agenda for the meeting at 7 pm Wednesday. Residents interested in the City Commission position can call Cocking at 620-343-4250 or reach out to any of the city commissioners for information.
