Burlington Northern Santa Fe says work could be done soon on repairs to the Mechanic Street underpass — which is good, because several Emporia residents are concerned about trains moving at a snail’s pace through town at times this week.
Earlier this week, residents complained about trains being stuck at the Mechanic Street underpass work zone, mentioning a stoppage of at least 36 hours in one instance. BNSF says drivers “might have experienced slower trains” than normal, as well as “a temporary backlog of traffic.”
The reason for the recent slowdowns, according to BNSF, is work underway at the Mechanic Street underpass, which has been closed for several weeks as unspecified repairs continue after a similar project last fall.
BNSF says it is working with the city to finish the Mechanic Street project. The railroad says Mechanic Street will remain closed to traffic for at least another week.
