Emporia Fire has determined the causes of a small structure fire in Emporia from Wednesday night and a grass fire near Emporia from Wednesday afternoon.
Emporia Fire Capt. Greg Davis says the balcony fire at the apartment complex at 1501 Center developed after “improper use and extinguishment of a recreational fire.” the small fire damaged a second-story balcony and a third-story balcony, but did not extend inside the building and did not cause any injuries.
Meanwhile, Davis says a grass fire that developed in the 900 block of Road 130, less than three miles south of Emporia, damaged about 80 acres — up from the initial estimate of 60 acres. A power line downed by moderate to occasionally high winds triggered that fire. There were no injuries and no reports of structural damage.
