Leaders of Emporia’s Vamos a Pescar program are hoping a recent visit to a national expo last weekend may translate to a higher level of Hispanic participation in outdoor activities in the near future.
Patricia Saenz-Reyes and Sally Sanchez were invited to attend the annual Open Season Sportsman’s Expo held in Overland Park last week allowing the program leaders an opportunity to learn from and connect with some of the best and brightest minds within the outdoor industry. The expo is held in multiple locations across the country each year and features demonstrations of the latest outdoor equipment and technology along with educational seminars taught by industry leaders.
During an interview with KVOE News, Sanchez encouraged local families to take advantage of opportunities such as the expo not only for the educational benefits but the hands-on opportunities as well.
Saenz-Reyes says attending the event was an inspiring moment and she hopes that in the near future they may be able to organize a similar event in Emporia.
Vamos-a-Pescar, which translates to Let’s Go Fishing, is a national grant-funded program that introduces Hispanic families to the activity of fishing. Sanchez and Saenz-Reyes attended last weekend’s expo at the invitation of What’s In Outdoors radio show host Phil Taunton who has worked closely with Vamos over the past several years.
