Training is underway for the volunteer attendants who will help veterans use the brand-new ATLAS telehealth pod at the Emporia American Legion Post 5.
On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, local veteran and Legion administrator Ron Whitney said there’s a lot of training either underway now or coming soon. Whitney says the process starts with registrations and background checks and builds on that.
Project ATLAS was announced last year by US Senator Jerry Moran and Congressman Tracey Mann. The goal is to have 8-foot-by-8-foot enclosed and soundproofed pods so veterans can have telemedicine appointments covering a range of topics, including prescriptions, social work, psychology, nutrition, addiction therapy and similar needs. Veterans will need to make appointments through VA offices, either in Topeka or Wichita, before using the Emporia ATLAS pod. Appointments will take place every Friday.
