Disc golfers from across the country and the world will be descending upon Emporia over the next several months with a slew of major events coming up quickly.
Events will begin this weekend with the Monkey Island Open at Peter Pan Park set to be held Saturday and Sunday. The two-day tournament will feature advanced, recreational and junior divisions and residents interested in playing can still sign up, however, there is a waiting list as the tournament field filled up in a single day according to Doug Bjerkaas of Dynamic Discs, a recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show.
The Monkey Island Open will be a precursor to Emporia’s largest annual disc golf event the Dynamic Discs Open taking place in late April. Bjerkaas says they are still in need of volunteers for the event and encourages everyone to sign up and lend a hand.
For those who have little knowledge of disc golf who would like to assist on the course, Bjerkaas says they will have informational workshops ahead of the DDO to make sure everyone knows what is expected of them. Both the Monkey Island Open and DDO will lead into the largest disc golf event in the world, the PDGA World Championships which are set to be held in Emporia at the end of August.
