The rainfall expected to start this week has forced a delay in one public safety project.
Healthier Lyon County had planned to install special “pedestrian islands” at four locations Monday and Tuesday:
*12th Avenue near Washington for Walnut Elementary School
*24th Avenue near Emporia Middle School
*Graphic Arts Road near Emporia Middle School
*18th Avenue between Emporia High School and Flint Hills Technical College.
With rain likely through Wednesday, Healthier Lyon County is now pushing the installation to March 28-29. Regardless of the start date, Healthier Lyon County Grant Manager Daphne Mertens says the “pedestrian island” concept is now considered best practice.
The project also has signs with QR codes so people can offer feedback.
The pedestrian island project also includes the Multi-Use Path Planning Board and the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning Organization. For more information, find Healthier Lyon County on Facebook or go online to www.flinthillsmpo.org/lyon.
