State lawmakers are looking at whether to expand transfers at the public school level.
Senate Bill 455, which would make schools take all out-of-district transfers — if there is space — advanced out of the Senate Education Committee on Monday. This would end the current practice of districts deciding transfer requests as they come in.
Lawmakers are also giving more conversation to a bill banning transgender athletes, specifically in girls’ and women’s sports. A bill was passed by both chambers last year but did not survive a veto from Kansas Governor Laura Kelly.
Lawmakers are also looking over what’s being called a “Parents Bill of Rights,” which would require schools to create lists of items up for parental review, including sexual content and profane or vulgar language, and would set up a lawsuit process for parents unhappy with public school policies.
