The state’s economy is humming along, if the latest unemployment numbers from the Department of Labor are any indication.
Across Kansas, the jobless rate was 2.5 percent last month, below the 2.6 percent mark seen in January and below the 3.6 percent rate in February 2021. There were other aspects of the monthly report that were pleasing to Labor Department economist Emilie Doerksen:
Locally, jobless rates dipped slightly month-to-month or were flat. Emporia had a jobless rate of 2.4 percent last month, below the 2.5 percent in January and below the 3.2 percent mark from February 2021. Lyon County, meanwhile, stayed at 2.5 percent month-to-month after being at 3.4 percent last year.
Areawide, the general trend was toward slight increases on the short-term level while staying below last year’s numbers. Only Chase and Wabaunsee counties had declines in their monthly jobless rates. Chase County maintains the area’s lowest unemployment rate at 1.9 percent. Coffey County has the highest at 3.4 percent.
