Friday marks the beginning of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and the SOS Child Advocacy Center is encouraging everyone to stand up and show a united front for those who suffer at the hands of others.
During a recent appearance on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, CAC Director Ashley Davis stated that on average there are right around 700,000 children who suffer some form of abuse each year. An even more alarming statistic shows that in the state of Kansas alone, 65 percent of abuse cases are sexual in nature and are committed by someone close to the child.
CAC Family Coordinator Adele Clark says given these statistics, education and open discussion of the signs of abuse and reporting procedures is all the more important.
In honor of CAP month, the CAC is asking residents to show their support for child abuse prevention by wearing blue and sharing the hashtag #WeAreBetterTogether throughout the month. Davis also invites residents to share photos of their efforts to raise awareness with the CAC by emailing photos to Aclark@SOSKansas.com or to the CAC’s Facebook page @CACEmporia.
