Children and families were dancing through the David Traylor Zoo Saturday morning for an event aimed at promoting early childhood development.
The Croaky Pokey story walk saw pages of the popular book posted throughout the zoo where families were able to show off their dance moves while also meeting with several local agencies that provide essential resources for childhood education. The event was a three-way partnership between the Zoo, Mobilizing Literacy and the Emporia Public Library.
The story walk is a part of local activities for the Month of the Young Child (April) which focuses on how to educate the “whole child” according to Mobilizing Literacy Director Rhonda Beatty.
Public Library Youth Services Coordinator Lori Heller says the importance of events like the story walk cannot be overstated.
Zoo Education coordinator Dehlia Sutton says the collaboration between agencies may not seem like a natural fit at first, until you look closer at each group’s core mission.
In addition to resources and infomation, attending families also received treats and a free book to take home with them during Saturday’s event.
