The Emporia Senior Center is seeking financial backing from both the federal government as well as local leadership in the coming weeks.
Emporia Senior Center Director Ian Boyd tells KVOE News that he has prepared an allocation request for the Emporia City Commission. The exact amount Boyd is seeking has not been disclosed, however, he says the request will likely be presented by Apr. 8.
In an email to KVOE News, Boyd stated, “My allocation request will begin a new chapter for the ESC and the city since we have not had this relationship in our history. I am hopeful that the city would match (or offer additional) funds from future allotments.”
At the same time, Boyd says he has prepared an American Rescue Plan Act funding application. Boyd says the application has been formalized and is awaiting approval by the board of directors. He says approval may be given during the board’s next regular meeting.
Again, the exact amount being sought has not been disclosed and Boyd has not stated when the application will be submitted, however, he says they are seeking “possible pandemic relief funds.”
The Senior Center has had to make multiple adjustments over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic including shutting down operations on more than one occasion for a prolonged period of time due to infections.
Both of these items were meant to be talking points for the ESC Board of Directors during a special meeting Friday evening. That meeting was canceled and according to Boyd will not be rescheduled.
KVOE has reached out to Boyd for a formal interview.
