Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a state of disaster emergency for Kansas due to impending high fire danger.
The Governor announced the declaration Tuesday as forecasts are calling for high winds and dry conditions that are increasing the potential threat of wildfires statewide. In a news release Tuesday, Governor Kelly stated “this declaration will allow our state agencies to pre-position firefighting equipment and extra manpower in areas considered to be at the greatest risk.”
Locally, a fire weather watch and wind advisory have both been issued for Chase County through 8 pm Wednesday. The forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid to low 60’s with relative humidity levels of 20 percent or less and wind gusts possibly as high as 45 mph.
Burning will not be recommended in the area as a result. Fire weather watches are significant as they typically serve as a precursor to red flag warnings.
