Emporia State baseball was outscored by Newman 9-8 in game 1 of a 3 game series Friday night.
The Hornets struck first scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning on a Sam Chaput double. Newman tied the game in the 4th inning. Emporia State retook the lead in the bottom of the 4th. Sam Chaput scoring on a Blake Carroll single. Newman would score 5 runs in the 5th inning and added a run in the 6th.
Emporia State would rally with a 5 run 7th inning. Kadyn Williams hit a 3 run home run and Quin Cherry hit a 2 run bomb.
Newman broke the 8-8 tie in the top of the 8th.
Coach Seth Wheeler said the 7th inning rally was encouraging but there were too many mistakes.
Emporia State and Newman play again Saturday afternoon with the first pitch at 2 pm at the Trusler Sports Complex.
