An electrical issue apparently started a house fire in Virgil that killed one person and destroyed the home earlier this month.
A news release from the Greenwood County Fire Chief’s Office says firefighters were called to 106 East Randolph late April 2 after a report of a house on fire with a person trapped inside. The two-story home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
One person escaped by using a second-story window, but the second person, later identified as Larry Crane, was unable to get out and firefighters couldn’t get inside for a search-and-rescue effort because the fire was affecting the entire house. Firefighters searched the home after the blaze was fully extinguished.
The Office of Kansas State Fire Marshal investigated the cause, with firefighters from Virgil, Eureka and Greenwood County’s Virgil, Madison and Hamilton divisions all involved in putting the fire out.
Monetary donations for Crane’s wife, Kerry, can be sent to The Eureka Herald, PO Box 590, Eureka KS 67045. Household items can be taken to the Herald at 822 East River Suite 100 in Eureka.
