A special concert is taking place at Emporia State University on Thursday to honor the legacy and impact of one of its alums.
The Augusta Shepherd Memorial Concert is at 7:30 pm at the Beach Music Hall Heath Recital Hall. The concert honors Shepherd, a graduate of Kansas State Teachers College in 1944 who later taught business classes at Admire High and served on the ESU Foundation Board of Trustees.
Shepherd died last year at age 98, but not before setting up the Shepherd Scholars Program along with her late husband, Hershel. The couple started with a $150,000 gift and later added funds to the program, which now helps ESU students that are at least juniors with two or more semesters remaining and cumulative grade point averages at or above 3.0. The 2022 class of Shepherd Scholars will be honored privately before the concert.
The concert is free and open to the public.
