Emporia Police are seeking the community’s help in locating the individual or individuals involved in a recent string of thefts and criminal damage incidents.
According to Emporia Police Capt. Lisa Hayes, EPD has received several reports in a 48-hour span between Monday and Wednesday of catalytic converters being cut out of vehicles at several businesses in far west Emporia. According to Hayes, thefts have been reported at John North Ford, Clint Bowyer Autoplex, USD 253 Emporia’s Bus Barn, the Furniture Loft parking lot and Mel’s Tire.
Hayes says they believe there are at least two suspects involved and they may be driving a dark-colored Ford Escape and a dark-colored passenger car. Additional information is not available at this time.
Emporia Police are encouraging residents to park their vehicles inside of a garage or as close to their residence as possible with outside lights to prevent their vehicle from being damaged. If you have to park on a public street, you are encouraged to pick a well lit one with a high volume of traffic.
It is unclear how many converters have been stolen at this time. Hayes says this is becoming a common trend across the nation with individuals sawing out the part and selling it for scrap.
If you have any information that can assist law enforcement in the case please call Emporia Police at 620-343-4200 or Lyon County Crime Stoppers at 620-342-2273.
