Emporia and area fire crews have had their hands full Friday afternoon.
Fire activity picked up just after 12:50 pm with multiple fires reported in a roughly three-hour span. Locations include:
*US Highway 56 and Road U (roughly 22 miles northeast of Emporia)
*Road 280 and A (Roughly 13 miles northwest of Emporia)
*Road 120 and J (three miles south of Emporia)
*Road L and 90 (nine miles south of Emporia)
The fire at US 56 and U was a controlled burn that became out of control due to shifting winds. Allen-Admire, Reading and Miller fire crews responded to the area and had the fire under control within 25 minutes.
There were reports of smoke crossing the highway but traffic was not disrupted according to Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch.
Emporia and Americus firefighters responded to the call at Road 280 and A just before 2 pm. According to initial reports, the fire scorched roughly 300 acres but did not lead to any injuries or structural damage.
Olpe Fire responded to Road 120 and J around 2:15 pm. Crews noted there was a residence in close proximity to the fire, however, crews managed to contain the flames before they reached any structures.
The fire at Road L and 90 was reported around 3 pm. Full details on that situation are currently pending.
