The month of April is all about partnerships for the Lyon County History Center.
Three partnerships will result in three new events beginning this Saturday with a “beginner genealogy” program which will explore the basics in genealogical research as part of a cooperative event with the Emporia Public Library. That event will take place Saturday at 2 pm inside the history center.
Once residents have done some research into their own personal history, they are invited to attend a special tour that will broaden their understanding of local history. LCHC has rescheduled its Santa Fe Trail bus tour, originally set to take place last year before a spike in COVID-19 cases.
The tour will take place Saturday, Apr. 30 and will take participants through the dirt roads of North Lyon County and will include stops at historic sites including the AI Baker property that was excavated in the 1970s. Baker was a judge who was killed by Bloody Bill Anderson in 1862.
The tour will follow two program presentations by Jan Huston on Apr. 26 at the Lyon County History Center and Apr. 28 at the North Lyon County Museum in Admire. History Center Deputy Director Lisa Soller says anyone interested in the bus tour will want to attend the presentations as well.
Following the bus tour, the third floor of the history center will then be filled with music on the night of Apr. 30 in support of the Emporia State University Choir. The choir will present “A Night of Poetry” beginning at 7:30 pm where audiences will hear the choir perform musical interpretations of poetry selections all to support the choir’s 2023 tour.
Tickets for the bus tour are $25 and include lunch with tickets for the poetry fundraiser ranging from $12 to $25. For more information on these and other activities visit explorelyoncounty.org.
