After approval by the Emporia City Commission on Wednesday, the Humane Society of the Flint Hills is operating the Emporia Animal Shelter for another two years.
Humane Society Director Stephanie Achille says the Humane Society had asked for a two-year extension instead of a one-year addition. She’s also pleased the Animal Shelter budget was tentatively set for a 10-percent budget increase instead of a 3- to 6-percent increase, as has been the case in years past. Achille says this will help offset utility costs, maintenance and upkeep and new programs. This also comes as the Animal Shelter continues emphasizing certain steps for the health and well-being of pets across town.
Achille says the extension comes as the Animal Shelter recently had a hoarding case where it had to take in over 25 kittens and young adult cats from a small apartment about two weeks ago. The cats are healthy, fixed and available for adoption.
Several fundraisers are ahead to help the Animal Shelter, including the LOVE Group’s screening of “The Secret Life of Pets” at 3 pm Sunday at the Emporia Granada Theatre. A donation of at least $5 is suggested. The Humane Society is also partnering with Twin Rivers Winery and Gourmet Shoppe for a special “Paws for Cause” painting fundraiser May 5. Cost is $30.
