A pretrial hearing is set for 2 pm April 29 after a sex assault trial in Lyon County led to a not-guilty verdict on one count and a hung jury on the remaining charges.
Jurors heard three days of testimony this week in the case against Victor Cardona-Rivera, who had been charged with rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, aggravated witness intimidation and criminal threat as part of nine counts lodged against him. The jury deliberated close to eight hours before finding Cardona-Rivera not guilty of an aggravated battery charge and not reaching verdicts on the remaining counts.
Court records say Cardona-Rivera was accused of raping a woman in early September 2021 after a woman in her 20s was home with her toddler and a male acquaintance got inside her home, threatened the woman and her child with a knife and subsequently raped the woman.
It’s unclear if the Lyon County Attorney’s Office will seek a retrial on the remaining charges.
