Local residents ran, biked and swam in and around Emporia State University Sunday morning all to support the future of incoming students.
The 27th annual Spring Migration Triathlon welcomed more than 60 competitors to the university’s campus where individuals and teams took part in a 400-meter swim, 20K bike ride and a 5K run. Triathlon co-director, and ESU Head Cross Country Coach, Mark Stanbrough says proceeds from the triathlon will go to support scholarships for incoming freshmen who will be entering the college’s coaching education program.
Stanbrough says ESU is one of only 12 universities with an accredited coaching education program.
Beginning in the mid-90s, the triathlon originally served as a fundraiser for Ducks Unlimited, hence the migration name, and would eventually transition into an event specifically for the university. Stanbrough says the event is not only a tradition for ESU, it also appears to be a tradition for many of the competitors.
Fundraising totals from the triathlon will be announced at a later time. Results can be found at Racethread.com.
In the Spring Migration, Triathlon Kevin Nickel won the men’s division finishing the 400-meter swim, 20K Bike Ride, and 5K run in 53 minutes 14.7 seconds.
Angela Redfern had the fastest women’s time of 1 hour 13 minutes 13 seconds.
Team Kohlmeier won the team competition.
