Saturday was a busy day for staff at the Lyon County History Center thanks to a pair of new partnerships.
The day began with a special bus tour across the Santa Fe Trail from eastern to western Lyon County. The tour included stops at local memorials and historical sites including the location where Judge AI Baker died at the hands of Bloody Bill Anderson in 1862.
The tour was a cooperative effort between the LCHC and Northern Lyon County Museum and was rescheduled from last year after COVID-19 caused the event to be postponed. With right around 40 individuals taking part, LCHC Deputy Director Lisa Soller says it was well worth the wait.
After passengers unloaded from the bus, staff then began preparing for a charitable evening of music and poetry in cooperation with the Emporia State University Choir. “A Night of Poetry” featured ESU Chamber Singers performing musical renditions of well-known pieces of poetry.
Soller also shared a few readings of poetry pieces during the evening. The selections included the works of Karl Sandberg, Walt Mason and the piece “Some Emporia Thing.”
Soller says each piece was selected for a specific reason.
