After a two-year absence, Emporia’s annual Cinco De Mayo celebration made a much-awaited return to downtown Emporia Saturday.
The 900 block of Commercial Street was full of music, food, dancing and vendors from the morning to evening hours to commemorate the annual holiday. Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow and Emporia Main Street once again and Main Street Director Casey Woods says it was a welcomed site to see so many people out celebrating together.
Sally Sanchez of HOTT says while Cinco De Mayo is historically a Spanish tradition, Saturday’s activities were a celebration of unity.
Among the many performers on Saturday’s schedule was Jenny Losada. Losada, a native of Colombia and former Seattle resident, says the level of diversity in Emporia is something you won’t find anywhere else.
All proceeds from Cinco De Mayo activities will support scholarships for nine local Hispanic students who are planning to attend either Flint Hills Technical College or Emporia State University. The scholarship recipients were recognized as part of Saturday’s activities.
