If the weather cooperates, a longstanding project to replace a bridge near Reading could be finished this month.
Crews have been working on the Kansas Highway 170 bridge just east of Reading since late June. Kansas Department of Transportation spokesman Dustin Hardin says there are several items left to finish, including asphalt pavement, grading and edging, guardrail and signage installation, pavement marking and grass seeding.
The highway has been closed since the $3.5 million project started, meaning a lengthy delay using K-99 and US-56 highways to get around the work zone.
This comes as KDOT continues resurfacing 22 miles of US Highway 56 across Lyon County from the Morris County line to the Osage County line. That project could also end in late May and involves alternating lane closures so drivers can get through the work zone. Interstate 35 has intermittent lane closures for pavement work in Coffey County this summer. Kansas Highway 177 from Council Grove north to K-4 outside Alta Vista remains closed to through traffic until November for road construction.
